AV Gadgets is an established online publication with reviewers and journalists—similar to Consumer Reports or Wired.com’s Gadget Lab—with paid staff and a reasonable expectation that products are either provided to reviewers or comped by manufacturers. While we aren’t really required to disclose how our products are obtained or what we do with them, we feel it’s important to be transparent about our interaction with product manufacturers. It’s a reasonable assumption that a site dedicated to product reviews, and which reviews dozens of products per month, must acquire those products to review. Given the fact that we don’t have a subscription-based model, and we might review literally HUNDREDS of products per year, we have chosen to operate under the auspices (consumer assumption) that manufacturers provide products to us for review at no cost to us. Were this not the case, we’d have to a) charge a subscription fee to cover purchase costs for products, and b) open up a fully-staffed return shipping department. We’d rather keep our site free to consumers and allocate resources to reviewing more products for our readers and then find ways to give away products to local non-profit organizations or other entities. All of AV Gadgets’ revenues come from affiliate sales (properly disclosed), banner marketing, or advertisers.
Regardless of whether or not manufacturers supply the products we review, we hope that, as a group of professionals, readers feel that our opinions are valid and as unbiased as they can be. This is born out in our content, breadth of reviews, and our in-depth methodologies.
