Yamaha RX-A1040 Receiver Preview
The Yamaha RX-A1040 receiver just about has it all. This new advanced AV receiver features built-in Wi-Fi, seven (7) amplifier channels (110W per channel), HDMI 2.0, 4K Ultra HD video upconversion, AirPlay and HDMI Zone 2 support. The new Cinema DSP HD3 uses four CINEMA DSP engines with advanced 3D processing to activate the optional front two presence channels in a 9.2-channel configuration for an enhanced vertical dimension in movies.
Like other Aventage products from Yamaha, the RX-A1040 employs their Total Purity Concept, using a high drive amp technology, high quality preamplification, anti-vibration technology and independent pure power supplies. The Yamaha RX-A1040 has a fully discrete power amplifier to minimize distortion and independent (dedicated) pure power supplies for the analog and digital circuitry. This keeps any digital noise from interfering with the analogue circuits. Independent power supplies for the DACs are designed to further eliminate noise.
The front of the Yamaha RX-A1040 Aventage receiver features an elegant aluminum front panel and really smooth touch volume/selector knobs. On the inside, the receiver is reinforced with cross members in an H shape to provide an extremely rigid and stable frame. The RX-A1040 AV receiver has been designed so that the left and right channels are physically and electrically isolated to maximize channel separation. An added benefit is that the signal to noise ratio is also improved.
Yamaha RX-A1040 Receiver Network Features
The Yamaha RX-A1040 receiver supports Internet radio, Pandora, Rhapsody, Spotify, SiriusXM and you can also stream just about anything from your iOS or Android device via the AV Controller App. If that weren’t enough, Wi-Fi is built right in so you can get up and running quickly or use Wireless Direct to stream music directly from your smartphone or tablet or control your receiver using the AV Controller App. In terms of audio streaming and connectivity protocols, you can use AirPlay, an HTC connect or MHL (Mobile High-Definition Link) via the front HDMI input.
Spotify Connect Support
We’re big fans of Spotify, and with the Spotify app on your smartphone, you can access millions of songs or stream those songs to your Yamaha receiver using Spotify Connect. Plus, when you’ve been listening on your smartphone outside and come inside, the song immediately streams to your AVR—kind of like magic. A front panel USB port lets you charge or digitally connect any iOS device and use the receiver’s remote control unit to operate the iPod/iPhone/iPad music playback functions. The Yamaha RX-A1040 Aventage receiver supports Dolby True HD, DTS-HD Master Audio, FLAC, WAV, and ALAC (Apple Lossless). Gapless playback is also supported, ensuring there are no pauses between audio files (Pink Floyd fans rejoice!)
Video Features
As mentioned earlier, The Yamaha RX-A1040 supports 4K Ultra HD video upconversion to HDMI. HDMI 2.0 supports means that 4K Ultra HD 50/60p input is supported and you’re basically future-ready with this av receiver. HDMI 2.0 connectivity support means that, in addition to 4K Ultra HD 50 Hz/60 Hz support, it also is ready for RGB, YCbCr 4:4:4, YCbCr 4:2:2 and YCbCr 4:2:0 video signals (a firmware update will allow the support of RGB, YCbCr 4:4:4 and YCbCr 4:2:2.)
The video processing on the RX-A1040 includes edge adaptive deinterlacing to smooth out jaggy noise, motion adaptive deinterlacing to detect moving or still images for precise pixel-by-pixel processing and multi-cadence detection including 3-2 pull-down. Normal HDMI zone switching sends the same HD video source to both the main and second zones, but the Yamaha RX-A1040 receiver can send an independent source to Zone 2 (and you can even utilize the on-screen GUI (graphical user interface) to browse and select your source or content.
Audio Features
The Subwoofer Trim Control enhances the low frequencies by avoiding overlap with the front speaker output. This will result in a cleaner, more focused sound stage while helping you achieve a seamless frequency response. The DAC on the Yamaha RX-A1040 is the well-regarded ESS Technology ES9006 Premier Audio DAC. This is a 192 kHz/24-bit DAC that has up to 120 dB of dynamic range, with very low distortion and noise.
The RX-A1040 receiver will assign amplifiers differently based on your setup automatically. For example, when you aren’t using Zone 2, all 7 amplifier channels will be configured for use in the Main Zone. Activate Zone 2, however, and the surround back channel amplifiers will be redirected to that Zone—leaving the Main Zone with 5 channels for a nice 5.1 surround configuration. What makes this all work so smoothly is the fact that the Yamaha RX-A1040 receiver has 9 speaker terminals for its 7 amplifiers, so you don’t necessarily have to reroute speaker wires to activate a second Zone.
The Yamaha AV Controller App is available for iOS or Android and lets you control power on/off and volume as well as select inputs and DSP modes.

Iam having an issue with HDMI input ports. None if them are working and the agent says that I have to replace the digital control board which is costing around 75% of the cost of the amplifier . Has anyone using this amp had this problem?
