The Audeze LCD-2 Classic: The Review Without the Audiophile Nonsense

I love these headphones. Let’s get that out of the way first and foremost. At $799, the Audeze LCD-2 Classic are not cheap for the average person. For the “audiophile,” they are a bargain. What they are is a solid pair of open-back planar magnetic headphones that will leave you amazed and in awe. Neutral, clean, and most importantly, accurate, they are everything I could want in a headphone. Let’s discuss.

Editors Note: We are trying a new format for reviews that include a very concise and to the point review. Our second review, The Audeze LCD-2 Classic Headphones: A Proper (Excessively Long-Winded) Audiophile Review we offer a longer form, more expansive review. Let us know which you prefer!

My Testing Setup

I don’t have a $5,000 tube amp or FLAC files blessed by monks. I have a clean, modern setup anyone could own: Headphones: Audeze LCD-2 Classic, Amp/DAC: Loxjie A40, Source: Apple Music (Lossless), MiniDisc (coax), Phono (RCA).

The Loxjie A40 had no trouble driving the LCD-2 Classics. Plenty of power, no strain, and it stays neutral, clean, and quiet. Exactly what you want feeding revealing headphones. Do you need a separate amp? No. Do they benefit from one? Probably. That said, I was able to drive them to respectable levels with an iPhone or MacBook Air.

Unboxing

The LCD-2 Classics arrive nestled in a premium hardshell case. Inside: Headphones, ¼″ terminated cable, ¼″ to 3.5 mm adapter, and documentation and warranty card. Presentation matters, and Audeze nails it. These look and feel like quality headphones, and they are.

Build Quality & Comfort

This is my second set of Audeze headphones. Like the MM-100s, the LCD-2 Classics feel unapologetically solid and are decidedly not portable. They are meant to live at home.

  • Solid
  • Heavy
  • Industrial
  • Not pretending to be portable

Clamping force is perfect. If you have a normal-sized head, they won’t squeeze, nor will they shift around. The headband uses soft leather nested in a magnesium alloy frame, with adjustable side posts. You never forget they’re on your head, but the weight is distributed well enough for long listening sessions. These are sit-down-and-listen headphones, not “walk around folding laundry” headphones. Exactly the point.

Listening Notes

The LCD-2 Classics are extremely clear and accurate. They don’t hype highs, thicken lows, or add any fake warmth. They play it like it is, the sound signature I prefer. Neutral doesn’t mean boring; it means correct.

Tracks I tested:

  • Dire Straits – Money for Nothing: Separation is effortless. The opening guitar has weight without bloating, and the mix stays organized even when it gets busy. Bass lines are easy to follow, but never push forward.
  • Dave Brubeck – Take Five: The 5/4 drum swing and upright bass remain distinct, and the cymbal is clean without harshness. Every instrument sits in its proper space.
  • Radiohead – Everything In Its Right Place: Layered synths and processed vocals stay clear, without smear or artificial expansion. The chaotic mix remains accurate, as intended.
  • Nils Lofgren – Keith Don’t Go (Live): Guitar is upfront but balanced; crowd noise adds context without distraction. Dynamics come through naturally, capturing the live feel.

Frequency Sweep

A quick sweep via AudioCheck.net confirmed expectations: Smooth low-end transition, no dropouts; mids clean with no strange resonances; highs roll off naturally, no harsh spikes; low tones audible down to ~25 Hz. The headphones handle extremes well and align perfectly with what I hear in music.

Pros & Cons – Audeze LCD-2 Classic

Our Take

At $799, the LCD-2 Classics are a steal for the build quality, clarity, and accuracy they deliver. They tell you what’s on the recording, without flowery audiophile nonsense. These cans are well-made, substantial, easy to drive, and as accurate as anything I’ve heard. More importantly, they don’t sound beautiful, they sound right.
