Sunfire XTEQ Subwoofers Preview
Sunfire (one of the luxury subwoofer and home theater audio companies under Core Brands) announced three new XTEQ subwoofers which are designed to put out loud, clear bass from an almost ridiculously small enclosure—among the smallest in the custom install industry, in fact. The new subwoofers meet a consumer need for smaller, more powerful home theater subwoofers—particularly the 8-inch model. The new Sunfire XTEQ subwoofer line has three different sizes that use drivers from 8-inches to 12-inches and produce up to 3000W of power. The 12-inch XTEQ sub goes down to 16Hz by using twin 12-inch drivers, one active and one functioning as a passive radiator.
What makes the XTEQ subs so small is that Sunfire made the entire enclosure of its 8-inch XTEQ8, 10-inch XTEQ10 and 12-inch XTEQ12 barely larger than the size of the woofer diameter. For example, the 12-inch XTEQ12 measures just 13.5″ in all directions. The new Sunfire XTEQ subs include multiple power-on options including auto audio sensing and 12 volt trigger activation. To protect the drivers (and the integrity of your soundtracks) they also feature soft-clipping amplification to make sure you don’t overextend the drivers—even at excessive volumes or output levels. To keep the sub in place, Sunfire used rubber “anti-walking” treads, and for dialing it in you have access to variable crossover and phase control. The Sunfire XTEQ subwoofers also have RCA line in/line out and slave connections, so you can use two subs easily, even if your AV receiver only has a single RCA line level output. XLR connections are also provided for balanced pro-level applications and installations. Low pass and high pass crossovers feature continuously variable frequency and phase adjustments.

All three new XTEQ subwoofers use Sunfire’s Tracking Down Converter amplifier design. The drivers all feature long-throw High Back-emf designs. The subs also include auto equalization (auto EQ) technology that can compensate somewhat for room acoustics (peaks and dips).
The new XTEQ line will ship in Fall 2014 and will retail for:
- Sunfire XTEQ8 subwoofer – $1,500
- Sunfire XTEQ10 subwoofer – $1,750
- Sunfire XTEQ12 subwoofer – $2,000
At these prices, the only reason you’d go smaller would be to match an aesthetic preference. These subs should do very well in the market and we hope to be able to review one shortly after they come out.
