TCL Releases Pricing on 85″ LED Displays

TCL teased their new 85″ LED LCD displays at the virtual CES event this year, and they’ve finally released pricing. The new line is being dubbed the XL Collection and includes an 8k and two different 4k displays. While they haven’t released the pricing on the 8k display yet (expect it to be EXPENSIVE), the two 4k’s have prices. We’ll run through the important features below and list the specifications at the end.

TCL 85S435 85″ LED Display

The 85S435 is the entry-level XL Collection from TCL. This 4-Series 85″ display does not have local zones of dimming (disappointingly). This allows TCL to lower the pricing considerably on this LED display. It does support 4k resolution, HLG and HDR10 (no Dolby Vision on this one), and has Roku included. the 85S435 comes in at a remarkable $1600 retail for an 85″ display.

Our Take: If all you want is a massive picture, the TCL 85S435 has what you need. But if you are looking for all the latest formats (Dolby Vision is not included) and features (no variable refresh rate support or 120Hz support for gamers), this one seems lacking. Add in the lack of full-array local dimming, and we call this one a pass.

TCL 85R745 85″ QLED Display

The 85R745 is an 85″ QLED model that supports all the current HDR formats (HDR10, HLG, Dolby Vision) and has 192 zones of local dimming (read this on why this is an important metric). It supports variable refresh rate for those that connect the latest gaming consoles. It is a true smart TV that works with Siri, Alexa, and Google. The 85R745 retails at $3000.

Our Take: The price may be high, but this is a true flagship from TCL. Roku integration ensures that the apps will be supported for a long time. An included advanced digital TV turner means you can easily connect an OTA antenna to get free, local TV stations. Our only real concern is the number of local zones of dimming. 192 may seem like a lot, but it will quickly be eclipsed by offerings from other manufacturers. At 85 inches, the TCL 85″ 85R745 QLED is a true projector killer.
