DISH 4K Joey Announced at CES 2015

You never know what will happen at CES. This year, DISH announced that is now the first pay-TV provider to launch a 4K “Ultra HD” set-top box. The new product is the 4K Joey, and it’s designed to work with DISH’s Hopper Whole Home HD DVR. The new 4K Joey looks like an excellent solution for customers looking to match up with their new 4K displays. The recent DISH partnership with Netflix indicates that DISH will be coming online with new 4K content shortly—a significant felt need for owners (and soon-to-be-owners) of 4K Ultra HD televisions.

The DISH 4K Joey is compatible with all HDMI 2.0/ HDCP 2.2-compliant televisions. This is much different than simply introducing an app on select TVs, as is the case with most 4K pay-TV options. Additionally, the DISH 4K Joey will not only play back 4K ultra HD content, it will also support side-by-side display of two HD programs at the same time. Previously, Joeys and the Hopper couldn’t play back simultaneous HD content  in picture-in-picture (PiP) mode. For sports enthusiasts looking to enjoy two games at once—this will be a big deal.

DISH is lining up deals to deliver 4K content from several providers, and specific announcements will be made in the second second quarter as the consumer Joey gets released. For now, we’ll expect Netflix to be in that group as it has already announced 4K streaming for select shows.

“Our new 4K Joey offers the most versatile, future-proofed 4K setup for our customers,” said Vivek Khemka, senior vice president of Product Management. “It’s easy to install and works with the most 4K televisions, so no matter what brand customers bought over the holiday season, they can enjoy content through DISH.”
