Epson EpiqVision Ultra LS650 UST Laser Projector First Look

Epson announced their new EpiqVision Ultra LS650 UST laser projector today. We break down this new, exciting Ultra Short Throw (UST) projector. Let’s discuss.

UPDATE: Epson has announced that the LS650 is now available for purchase. Pricing has also been revealed at $2799.99. We are reprinting this First Look for reference.

General Performance

The Epson EpiqVision Ultra LS650 UST laser projector promises a 4k, HDR image up to 120″. HLG as well as full 10-bit HDR are supported. No indication on the specification sheet of how far away the projector must be from the screen for the maximum size. The Epson EpiqVision Ultra LS650 utilizes a 3-Chip 3LCD 1080p projection solution. It “wobbles” the pixels four times to achieve the stated resolution. Epson, long a proponent of accurate brightness claims, states that the LS650 will achieve up to 3600 lumens. They measured colored light in accordance with IDMS 15.4 and white light output in accordance with ISO 21118.

The LS650 has dual HDMI 2.0 inputs (18 Gbps/HDCP 2.3) including one that has eARC. Additional connections include an optical audio output, three USB-A connections (two for data, one for power), and a USB-B connection for service. It can also connect via Bluetooth to stream audio via the internal Yamaha speakers or out to a standalone speaker via the eARC connection.

Quality of Life Features

The EpiqVision Ultra LS650 UST laser projector has Android TV built-in giving you access to most if not all of the streaming services on the market. Epson also has its own Setting Assistant app (Android or iOS) that will walk you through adjusting the display size for easier setup. The laser light engine promises up to 20,000 hours of use.

Epson is also offering their own Ambient Light Rejecting (ALR) screen solution called SilverFlex. Sold in two sizes (100″ or 120″), they are designed to reject up to 90% of the ambient light for use in brightly lit rooms. Just remember, if you have light control, you don’t need an ALR screen.

The Epson LS650 very quiet at 36dB in normal mode and 23dB in eco mode. This means that you can sit fairly close to it and not be bothered by the fan. Unfortunately, there is no way to hardwire the projector for Internet though it does have a 2.4GHz or 5Ghz wireless connection. Epson offers a two-year limited warranty with two-business-day replacement with free shipping.

Wrap Up

The Epson EpiqVision Ultra LS650 UST laser projector will be available soon in white or black. Pricing and availability will be announced Fall of 2023.
