Yamaha CD-S2100 SACD Player hero CD Players

Yamaha CD-S2100 SACD Player Preview

The new Yamaha CD-S2100 SACD Player goes after the high end two-channel market with a source component worthy of the company’s rich musical heritage. You can’t help but be reminded of the “glory days” when products touted extremely high build quality and components and parts that sprung from an intense desire to produce only the highest-quality audio reproduction possible. Yamaha has very solid CD and SACD player here with the CD-S2100—a perfect match, by the way, to its exceptionally well-built Yamaha A-S2100 Integrated Amplifier.

Yamaha CD-S2100 SACD Player Internals

Like the A-S2100, the CD-S2100 SACD player has a construction that is completely symmetrical. The rotating loader mechanism is positioned in the center of the chassis, and the digital and analogue power supply and circuit boards are split on the left and right side, respectively. The idea was to completely isolate the analogue and digital boards to eliminate interference between the circuits. A nice 1/4″ thick aluminum front panel rounds out the balance and style of this player and serves to also increase the stiffness of the chassis.

Single-stage Configuration I/V Conversion Circuit

Yamaha’s CD-S2100 takes the signal from the D/A converter and outputs it as an analog signal by using an I/V conversion circuit configured in multiple stages. It uses a single-stage configuration with a high slew rate that is designed to lower audio signal loss  and negative feedback (NFB) when compared to a multistage configuration circuit. When you use a balanced (XLR) connection with the A-S2100, you get audio reproduction without transmission loss.

High Precision CD Drive and Tray

The Yamaha CD-S2100 uses the same drive mechanism as the company’s flagship CD-S3000. The loader mechanism is connected to the chassis by heavy, specially curved 1/16” thick iron reinforcing anchors in front of and behind the loader mechanism. There is virtually no vibration transmitted from the spinning disc to the circuit board. Yamaha believes that by eliminating even slight tilting of the mechanism, stabilized rotation and ultra-precise reading is possible.

The aluminum CD tray very rigid as well, further reducing any vibrations caused by the disc spinning at high speed. A nice side effect is extremely quiet operation. The opening/closing of the tray is customized through the addition of a meshed wire drive, and the result is a very smooth operation.

High Performance 32-bit D/A Converter

The CD-S2100 player uses an ES9016 D/A converter from ESS Technology, Inc. It supports 32-bit audio processing, generates its own master clock, and supports an original jitter elimination function. The result is extremely low impact of clock jitter. The chip also contains an 8-channel D/A converter and uses dual differential operation with 4-channel D/A converters on both channels. The analogue signal processing circuit uses a balanced configuration and this DAC features an extremely high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).

Built-in USB DAC and ASIO 2.3 Yamaha Steinberg USB Driver

The Yamaha CD-S2100 has a built-in USB DAC that lets you directly input digital audio from a computer. This USB DAC uses an IC developed specifically for Yamaha that has an internal master clock and low-jitter transmission. The CD-S2100 also supports ASIO 2.3 (Yamaha Steinberg USB Driver) which lets you achieve lower delay and higher throughput over standard OS sound drivers. Another benefit is that this allows the CD-S2100 to be compatible with 192 kHz/24-bit resolution digital audio and also supports native DSD playback.

Yamaha CD-S2100 Remote Control

The remote control for the Yamaha CD-S2100 SACD player has the same aluminum texture as the front face of the player. It’s a nice, weighty remote that is similar to that found in the Yamaha A-S2100 Integrated Amplifier—making it fully capable of controlling input selection, volume and other features of that product as well. The difference is that this remote also allows you to directly access tracks and limits the direct input capability. If you have both products you’ll get more use out of the integrated amp remote unless you plan on jumping to specific tracks on a CD or SACD.
